Berkeley Hillel's Freshman outreach Initiative

Hillel's programs and activities have been attracting
increasing numbers in recent years, yet many of the
3,500 Jewish students at Cal, especially freshmen, are
still ambivalent at best about becoming involved in
Jewish life. This grant will focus increased energy
on welcoming new freshmen, reaching out to them in a
way that meets their needs, develops relationships with
them and helps them understand that there are no prerequisites
to Jewish involvement.

Israel Learning Days: Education Seminars for Campus
and Community

Israel Learning Days will create, publicize, present
and assess eight one-day basic education courses on
Israel during the 2003-2004 academic year. Taught by
Lehrhaus' best instructors using Lehrhaus' nationally
recognized In a Day format, these courses will be promoted
and presented primarily to campus and community groups
aged 18-35.

East Bay Jewish Bereavement Project

A community-wide support program for individuals who
are grieving over the loss of a loved one. The program
offers year-round weekly grief support groups in both
Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. A "Bereavement
outreach Coordinator" coordinates with Jewish institutions
to identify Jews who have recently lost a loved one
and connects them with appropriate services.

To increase the amount of hours of transportation provided
to residents by RCJL 's handicapped-accessible bus,
from the current Monday through Friday only, to offer
the opportunity for residents to go out Sundays and

Night Concert, 2003

To present the renowned Israeli group, Habreira Hativit
opening night. With Israel and the world in crisis,
it is essential to reinforce the connection between
Israel and the Diaspora, and inspire general audiences
with the dynamic culture. Music is a key way to communicate
the Jewish/ Israeli experience.

Learning for Life: A Program Partnership with the Revson
and Koret Foundations

To develop a new curriculum for older-adult audiences,
to be sited at several locations including assisted-living
facilities/ nursing homes. Courses based on this curriculum
will utilize the cutting edge learning technology of
the new DVD-ROM version of Abba Eban's Civilization
and the Jews. Its massive data resources will be used
to enrich the student learning experience.

Adam V' Adama- Learning to Teach Judaism and Ecology

To meet an increasing interest in curriculum
materials and activities relating to Jewish environmental
education, by providing and therefore enabling educators
to experience and incorporate teachings on Judaism and
ecology into their educational programs. The project will
involve 25 Jewish educators including religious schoolteachers,
camp counselors, youth group leaders, and Jewish naturalists. |
