2005 Kohn Summer Intern Program

JVS 2005 Kohn Summer Intern Program will recruit and place up to 33 college students from the San Francisco and East Bay areas in eight-week internships in Jewish communal agencies to develop future leadership for the Jewish community.

 

Hof Ashkelon Regional Counsel
Hot Meals for the Elderly in Hof Ashkelon

$12,400

From the PCE and FoF-Israel & World Jewry

 

 

200 elderly from the moshavim in Hof Ashkelon Regional Council will receive a hot meal three times a week at the regional day-care center or at the clubs in their communities. These moshavim are defined as rehabilitation settlements. Elderly who cannot reach the day-care center will receive hot meals in their homes.

For communal scholarships to attend Midrasha. The Midrasha system annually awards more than $29,000 in scholarships for teens to attend this supplemental Jewish education program.

A social program for Jewish adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities, designed to enhance and deepen participants' Jewish identity. Groups will meet once monthly in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, where participants will socialize, experience Jewish ritual, holidays and life cycle events, and integrate into the larger Jewish community.

Increased Social Service Hours (Bridge Funding)

To increase the number of hours in the Social Service Department, specifically in our skilled nursing unit. Currently we are budgeted for 24 hours per week. We would like to be able to provide an additional 16 hours per week, and plan to include this expansion in our budget after this bridge year.

The "Digital Classroom" for Older Adults: Harnessing New Instructional Media for Jewish Learning

Program of innovative courses for older adult audiences, to be sited primarily in assisted-living facilities/nursing homes: classes utilize the cutting edge learning technology of new DVD titles, such as "The Anne Frank House," and "They Came for Good (U.S. Jewish history)." This program draws on the success of three years of pioneering Lehrhaus efforts in digital education.

Support Groups for Battered Jewish Women

The purpose of the grant is to fund the only confidential support group for Jewish battered women in the East Bay. The group will provide counseling, support, safety planning, and spiritual healing to Jewish women currently or formerly an abusive relationship. Groups draw upon Jewish cultural and spiritual traditions of healing.

Religious/Spiritual Support for Jews Living with Chronic Illness or Disability

This grant will go towards the cost of providing religious and spiritual support for Jews living with chronic illness or disability, including frail elders, and their loved ones. This includes pastoral visits, religious services, short-term spiritual counseling, and a support group.

Provide an interfaith component to the Early Childhood program of the Contra Costa Jewish Community Center. A three-month, twice monthly program integrated into the Preschool, but open to the entire community, inviting interfaith families with young children to explore Jewish practice in their homes for shared values.

Camp Kadima Jewish Community Day Camp

In 2005, Camp Kadima will enhance its summer program by bringing in specialists in the areas of art, music, nature, and photography; initiate a junior counselor program, "Habonim", to mentor counselor leadership from within; and expand efforts to reach unaffiliated families in South County through its camper and staff recruitment activities.

 

Contra Costa Jewish Day School
Making Middle School Work - Growing the CCJDS Middle School Effectively

Contra Costa Jewish Day School seeks support to develop our middle school, a costly addition. However, by adding middle school CCJDS provides central Contra Costa County a K-8 Jewish elementary school option. The school seeks funding support to court transfer students into 6th grade and to offer tutorial assistance in Hebrew to those transfer students.

ETOP in the East Bay

TJT's Educational, Touring and Outreach Program (ETOP) responds to the many requests from community organizations wanting to bring vital Jewish culture to their area. Each year's production reflects the Jewish experience and is suitable for wide range of audiences, 3rd grade and older. The program includes workshops taught by ETOP artists that promote dialogue, creative expression, and inspiration.

 

San Francisco Jewish Film Festival
2005 Festival - East Bay

To underwrite the production and promotion of the 2005 Jewish Film Festival in the East Bay -- marking its 25th anniversary with expanded signature programming. The Festival brings a renowned array of the finest international Jewish Cinema to East Bay audiences. As in the past, East Bay programming will include panels, dialogues and community-building events.

JCHS Israel Exchange Program

JCHS is working with the Leo Baeck High School in Haifa to pilot an Israel exchange program. This year, JCHS seniors will have the opportunity to experience a visit to Israel. Following 2005, students from Leo Baeck will visit JCHS and spend part of the academic experience here with our students, faculty and families.

It is a growing phenomenon that Jewish college students, faced for the first time with the opportunity to be independent decision-makers, often turn their backs on becoming connected Jewishly. Through a year-long seminar project, Berkeley Hillel will offer to unengaged students that Judaism has a powerful, meaningful, and personally relevant spiritual wisdom to convey.

Darchei will provide East Contra Costa Jewish adults an educational experience which will provide classes on Judaism, its rituals, its holidays and basic reading and prayers. In addition, it will provide workshops for interfaith couples. The goal of Darchei is to provide the program's participants with a comfort level for Jewish study, celebration and prayer.

Funding for "Ages and Stages" helps to support the high-quality JCC's children's and senior programs and continuation of essential JCC core services.
