Scholarship Support

The three Jewish Day Schools in the East Bay collectively provide scholarships to 35% of our students for a combined financial assistance budget of $1,084,140. While tuition revenues and fundraising efforts provide a significant revenue stream, as enrollments increase scholarship needs have also increased, due to a higher number of students requiring financial aid.

 

Contra Costa Jewish Community Center
Early Childhood Scholarships for Unaffiliated and Interfaith Jewish Families; Pre-School Admissions Director; and Family Outreach

To provide need-based scholarships for Jewish families that would be primarily targeted to interfaith and unaffiliated families to enable them to enroll their children in the Center's Nursery School; to hire a part-time Admissions Director for its Pre-School program. This position will enable the School to more aggressively pursue its objective of expanding student enrollment, thus more quickly expanding this important revenue stream of the Center; and to create a Sunday Outreach program for families living in areas surrounding Walnut Creek. Using Sundays at the outdoor pool, the JCC and the Federation Regional Office will provide fun, food and entertainment for parents and children on 6 Sundays to begin to involve them in the JCC's programs.

 

Berkeley Hillel
"510": Twenty-Something Engagement Initiative

Berkeley Hillel has developed a new young adult program that offers social, religious/spiritual, educational, social action and arts/culture activities. As the program develops more, they hope to give participants an opportunity to plan their own programs and volunteer in other ways. There are plans for classes on Jewish topics, as well as professional skills development.

Engaging High School Students in Jewish Learning: Updating Our Community High School Core Curriculum

To revise and update the Core Curriculum that is currently being delivered to the almost 700-8th through 12th grade students enrolled in our Midrasha Jewish Community High Schools. The primary goal is to provide a curriculum that is relevant to the concerns and questions of Jewish teens and engages our students in dynamic Jewish learning.

 

 

Jewish Vocational Services (JVS)
2007 Kohn Summer Intern Program

For the 2007 Kohn Summer Intern Program. JVS will recruit and place up to 33 college students from the San Francisco and JCFGEB areas in eight-week internships in Jewish communal agencies to develop future leadership for the Jewish community.

Ethical Start

To purchase and implement the JCC Association's Ethical Start Program for it's Nursery School. This unique early childhood curriculum will form the core of the School's Jewish content programming. It will provide a multi-faceted program that train teachers and exposes children and parents to a user-friendly approach to learning Jewish values based upon the classical Jewish text, "Pirkei Avot," the "Ethics of Our Fathers."

To develop and execute a Marketing and Public Relations campaign in Contra Costa and Tri-Valley to reach out to the large unaffiliated population. Respondents to the campaign will be added to the Federation database and will be helped to connect with Jewish life in the area.

Shofar Fellowship: A Call to Leadership for Educators of Jewish Teens

"The Shofar Fellowship: A Call to Leadership for Educators of Jewish Teens" is a yearlong, intensive professional development fellowship for Jewish teen educators. The fellowship will strengthen the personal and professional capacity of educators working with teens in Jewish settings in the areas of Judaism (and Israel), Adolescent Development, Organizational Life, and Programming and Practice.

Shabbat Weekend for Children with Disabilities and Their Families

To subsidize the cost for at least twelve East Bay families to attend the sixth annual Shabbat Weekend for Children With Disabilities and Their Families. This program will enable 30+ families to experience the joys of Jewish family camp in an inclusive, accepting and nurturing environment. In most cases, this weekend is the families' primary connection with the Jewish community.

Holocaust Survivor Management Services

To expand care management services for the increasingly frail population of Holocaust survivors whom we serve in both counties , enabling people to live at home with improved access to health care, caregiver support and community contact. These services augment our existing program of restitution assistance, financial assistance, and Cafe Europa socialization activities.

Providing Jewish Education for all: Preparing Our Teachers to Serve Students with Special Learning Needs

To provide training for forty teachers from East Bay Religious Schools, Jewish Day Schools, and Midrasha Community High Schools who registered to participate in the CJLL Special Needs Teacher Training. Training will include attendance at four Teacher Training Workshops and one classroom observation and evaluation with a CJLL learning specialist. Teachers completing the four 2 1/2 hour training sessions and associated assignments will receive a professional development stipend.

 

Jewish Family and Children's Services of the East Bay
Gateways to the Community

To sustain and expand services for East Bay Jews with disabilities and their families. Current programs serve Jewish adults and children with developmental disabilities. We propose to initiate a "warmline" providing information, referral and supportive counseling, as well as new programs for parents of Jewish children with disabilities.

Student Financial Aid for Midrasha Programs

A successful collaborative and inclusive communal program, Midrasha faces substantial annual requests for financial aid in order to maintain the Midrasha policy of never turning away any student for any program because of an inability to pay for it.

Chai Initiative

The Chai Initiative is an extensive outreach program targeting Jews ages 21 to 45. Designed to strengthen community connection, Chai invites people to stand up and be counted as proud community members who can make a difference. Our hope is that once people realize the impact they have, they will become donors, thus broadening the Federation's donor base.

Love Shouldn't Hurt

To support "Love Shouldn't Hurt" to provide peer-led healthy relationships education to 700 Jewish teens, parents, and youth leaders; train 50 Bay Area Jewish educators on preventing and identifying abuse; and publish, market and distribute the first comprehensive Jewish teen dating violence curriculum in the country.

Fremont Midrasha Transition to Re-Envisioned Program

To fund the transition of Fremont Midrasha to a new model that better meets the needs of the community. The present program has 32 students enrolled. A major restructuring--with enhanced programming, relocation, rescheduling, increased staff hours, a stronger marketing --is expected to result in an enrollment of 75+ students.

The Bedside Program: Palliative and Comfort Care Using Non-Medical Modalities

From the first stages of physical decline that necessitates extended periods of bed rest, a resident participating in the Bedside Program receives a comprehensive therapeutic program of life enhancement, psychological support and hope. In turn, family and friends receive support and guidance as they cope with End of Life Issues. "The Bedside Program: Palliative and Comfort Care Using Non-Medical Modalities" focuses on life and future thinking at a time when hopelessness and depression may overwhelm the resident and the family.

This grant will be used to complete the development and opening of a new Hebrew-language immersion preschool. It will supplement existing donations. It will help finance the cost of a contracted program developer, the initial advertising to the targeted population, and the staff research and hiring process.

 

Jewish Music Festival
22nd Annual Jewish Music Festival

The JMF presents a festival every March that includes concerts of internationally and nationally known artists; participatory events such as dances, instrumental "jams,"and a Community Music Day, highlighting local musicians. Since 2002, we have also conducted a school and community outreach program, bringing Jewish music to the public schools and organizations throughout the Bay Area.

Aging Resources Reference Guide

Quality aging services are available, but access is hindered by lack of information. This grant funds publishing a guide to Jewish aging services and is a project of the regional Consortium on Aging. The guide will give key contact people and end-users centralized information to facilitate connecting those in need and their families with services.

The Contra Costa International Film Festival

The expansion of outreach to the Tri-Valley region and the loss of the traditional theatre (with the subsequent major increase in rental fees at our new venue) has resulted in significantly increased expenses for 2007. "Bridging funding" will provide funding until new major donors are identified.

Advocating for Jewish Students in the Public Schools

The East Bay JCRC is frequently contacted by parents who need support in the public schools relating to Jewish holiday observances, questionable curriculum and subtle/overt anti-Semitism. Having just created a brochure that includes a calendar and guide to the Jewish holidays, the JCRC is poised to meet with key school administrators and distribute this brochure to educators in both Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Funds are needed to produce the brochure and implement this outreach program.

To reinstitute the Community Youth Shabbat Retreat. This retreat at Camp Newman is for affiliated and unaffiliated 3rd thru 7th graders of the community. The retreat brings youth together in a neutral and relaxed environment to start a bond that will benefit our community as students approach youth group and Midrasha experiences.

San Francisco Jewish Film Festival
2007 Festival - East Bay

To underwrite the production and promotion of the 2007 Jewish Film Festival in the East Bay, building on the expanded Berkeley programming of the 2006 Festival and resulting enthusiasm and energy generated in the Berkeley community. Festival programming will include film, as well as filmmaker Q&A/discussion sessions and festival events.

To reach out to Jews, their families and others who seek connections to Jewish life and community to invite them to "homey" Shabbat dinners. We will follow up afterwards to extend the personal connection and help them take next steps towards finding their "home" in the Jewish community.

Daughters of Miriam Seder (community women's seder)

To plan an east Bay Women's Community Seder, for women and their daughters, living in the 580/680/84 Tri-Valley/Tri-City corridor. With this subsidy, the 2007 Seder cost of admission can be reduced and therefore more generations of women can benefit from sharing this experience together.

As the OHDS development office continues to upgrade its communications strategies, database management capacity and volunteer training, various support services and materials are necessary. This grant will have help OHDS to broaden and deepen its donor base and achieve fundraising goals.

Israel at 60

To underwrite the initial phase of outreach and community building to raise Israel at 60 consciousness in the East Bay. The creation of an Israel at 60 committee and the convening of advisory groups will enhance Israel-related programming and facilitate the identification of effective tipping-point/decision-making individuals who will work to strengthen Israel-East Bay ties.
